Made in the West Film Festival
2024
The Made in the West Film Festival is an exciting event featuring award-winning young film makers of Western Sydney. Their show evolves around a fantastical theme, promoted through a new illustration poster every year.
Transforming their ‘story-world making machine’ concept into an action story between a team of young filmmakers and their imagination. Not only does the illustration capture the fun and creative side but highlights the collaborative nature of filmaking. With charming characters equipped in film-making action gear, they work as a team to merge ideas together and bring them to life.
Concept Development
To begin, I created a range of different approaches that derived from key points from the brief’s description:
story-world making machine
represent effort & teamwork
projector shining like a rocket
The first two compositions were direct visual interpretations of the ‘rocket-like story machine’. The concept combined visuals of a rocket with a film camera, launching into the abyss of endless exploration. This safely played into the existing storyline, and represented the theme clearly.
The third was more experimental, putting my own twist that incorporated several characters. The focal point shifted more on the collaboration aspect of the brief. The layout idea was more complex with a dynamic perspective and film-making equipment weaponized to enhance the action. The client saw this approach as an opportunity for the story to evolve and showed interest in humanising the event.
